What is FEES?

Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a procedure to assess swallowing instrumentally. A thin flexible tube with a small camera and light on the end is passed through the nose to help us view the throat (pharynx) and voice box (larynx). With the camera in place we can view important structures for speech and swallow and view swallow physiology in function whilst you eat and drink, to help us determine any potential signs of swallowing difficulty.

During your assessment you will be observed eating and drinking a range of food and drink to help assess what is happening and guide future recommendations.

Your Speech & Language Therapist, or Consultant Specialist, will let you know if they think a FEES Assessment is in your best interests.
